Application - Funding PhD course

NOVA offers several forms of funding for Nordic co-operation within the areas of education and research. All teachers, researchers and students at NOVA member institutions are invited to apply for funding of joint ventures.

MSc projects concerns both single subject courses, such as intensive MSc courses, and complete programmes. Teachers may apply for funding to plan and develop new courses and programmes and for course or programme implementation.

PhD projects involves single subject courses and could also develop into series of events. Teachers and researchers may apply for funding to establish or plan and develop new PhD courses. Funds are also available for financing certain costs for running NOVA PhD courses.

MSc courses and projects
NOVA promotes Nordic co-operation in the field of higher education by supporting and funding development of both single subject courses and entire programmes. 1. What kind of grants and funding are available for MSc?
Notice that salary costs normally must be financed by national financial resources. This also includes subsistence allowances.

The following types of NOVA grants are available for MSc level projects:


Planning grants - for establishing a NOVA network or planning for joint courses or programmes
You can apply for Planning grants if you are two or more partners from at least two NOVA member institutions. You can get funding for establishing a NOVA network, or if you want to meet with your network to plan or develop a NOVA intensive course or a joint NOVA programme. You must be sure that your idea is anchored in the home environment at all participating universities before sending an application.

You can also get funding for writing an application to NOVA for launching an Implementation project (see below) or to external donors, like the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The planning grant can not exceed 5.000 euro. No deadline.


Intensive MSc courses (NIMCs) - for running intensive MSc courses
You can apply for funding of certain expenses for running intensive NOVA MSc courses. The course must last a minimum of five days and preferably not more than two weeks. There should be visiting students from at least two NOVA member universities.

It is preferred that the intensive courses are run during the following periods:
* Summer mobility window, weeks 33 and 34
* Winter mobility window, weeks 2 and 3

The NOVA grant is aimed at funding expenses like extra material, transports, a social evening or an invited external teacher.

You can get a maximum of 5.000 euro if you have partners from at least two other NOVA member universities in your network. If you have only one partner you can get a maximum of 4.000 euro. Deadline June 30.
A second call is announced, deadline October 15.

Visiting students and teachers shall apply for NOVA/Nordplus grants via their local (home) NOVA/Nordplus coordinator.


Implementation projects
If you have a NOVA network with representatives from all relevant NOVA member institutions and have decided to develop cooperation in the form of a joint Nordic MSc programme, you can apply for NOVA funding of network meetings and a maximum of 5.000 euro for part-time network coordination, during a maximum of one year.

There is no formal limit on the amount available.

Deadline for application is October 15.


Networking
You can get NOVA grants for meeting with your NOVA network to monitor a NOVA network project. It is up to NOVA to decide for how long period your network can get such a grant.

Maximum grant is 5.000 euro. Deadline for application is October 15.


Mobility grants for students and teachers
The main source for funding student and teacher mobility is Nordplus.
If this source is not available, NOVA can give grants for NOVA and non-NOVA teachers, for covering travel and accomodation costs.


2. How to get MSc grants and funding?

Common requirements - when applying for grants and funding for MSc projects.

Costs financed by NOVA
The following types of costs are financed by NOVA grants when related to relevant projects:

  • Travel costs
  • Accomodation costs
  • Salary for non-NOVA members
  • Other direct costs

NOVA do NOT finance:

  • NOVA member salary, subs. allowance included
  • central overhead costs.

Normally, NOVA grants are paid after the projects has been finally reported.

Agreement
When you have been awarded a NOVA project grant, you will get a formal decision document. You will also be asked, together with NOVA and the head of your department, to sign an agreement.

In advance
However, you will be offered a certain amount of the payment in advance, normally up to 60% of the total grant. This offer will be presented, with certain prerequisitions, in relation to an agreement signed by NOVA, the project leader and the head of responsible department.

Final report and payment
Before the project is accepted and closed, there must be a final report, including a financial report.

Invoice
Once your financial account has been accepted, you are requested to send an invoice to:

PhD courses and projects

Within the research area, NOVA primarily funds planning and running of intensive NOVA PhD courses.
NOVA funds several planning projects and around 15 PhD courses per year.

1. What kind of funding and grants are available?
The following types of NOVA grants are available:

Planning grants
- for establishing a new network within a certain subject area or
- for developing single NOVA PhD courses or series of events.

You can apply for a NOVA planning grant if you are NOVA representatives from at least three different member institutions, who wish to establish a NOVA network, or develop a NOVA PhD course (single event).
Make sure the initiative is fully anchored at the home environments, and that it will be accepted and funded as a PhD course.

Running a PhD course
- you can apply for NOVA grants for covering most marginal expenses for running a single or a serie of intensive NOVA PhD course(s).

Grants for travel expenses
- Teacher travel expenses are funded within the grant for planning and course expenses. However, NOVA does not fund student travel expenses in relation to PhD courses.

NOVA has a close cooperation with NordForsk. You can apply to NordForsk for funding of visiting PhD students from other Nordic countries, from the Baltic states and from Northwest Russia. >>>

2. The responsibilities of the NOVA Network
To get funding for, and run a NOVA PhD course, there must be a network behind the course consisting of members from at least three different NOVA member institutions, prefereably more.

  • The network is responsible for anchoring the course in the scientific environment.
  • The network is responsible for advertising the course in the national environment. The course will automatically be advertised on the NOVA web site.
  • The course leader is responsible for up-dating the information on the NOVA web site, and for establishing an indiviual course web site, which must be linked to the NOVA site.

3. Expenses funded by NOVA grants
NOVA funds teachers and students from the NOVA member institutions. Travel, accomodation and a certain fee for invited non-NOVA teachers can also be funded.

The following types of expenses are funded by NOVA grants:

  • Travel expenses (not for students)
  • Accomodation
  • Fee (for non-NOVA teachers - max 5.000 euro)
  • Other marginal expenses
  • Local adminstration, max 10% of the total grant.

NOVA does not fund the following expenses:

  • Salary for NOVA member participants/teachers
  • Central overheads

Agreement
When you have been awarded a NOVA project grant, you will get a formal decision document. You will also be asked, together with NOVA and the haed of your department, to sign an agreement.

4. How to report and get the payment
NOVA grants are paid after the project report has been sent to, and approved by NOVA rector. As project leader you are responsible for administrating and reporting your project.

In the web system you are requested to:

  • Update information about the course
  • Register all students accepted to the course
  • Use the NOVA student evaluation form for student evaluation
  • Report ECTS and the result of the student evaluation
  • Comment on the result of the student evaluation, an on the course in large
  • Report the financial status of the course
  • Sign the relevant reports and send to NOVA

Payment in advance (PhD courses)
When all accepted students are registered in the web system you may request an advance payment of up to 60% of the total grant.

Final report and funding
Before the project is accepted and closed, and final payment is sent, a final subject an financial report must be accepted by NOVA rector. For NOVA PhD courses this is handled via the web system for course administration.

When the final report has been accepted by the NOVA rector you may send an invoice for the final payment to:
