Nordic Program in Plant Pathology

About the Nordic Countries and NorPATH

The Nordic countries
The Nordic countries rely on horticulture, agriculture and forestry production to fulfil both national demands and to secure significant export incomes. Environmental awareness is important, and has led to common political goals, such as the reduction of pesticide use and focus on sustainable production methods. This has resulted in a well developed legislation and control systems related to the highly efficient production of healthy crops and food and fodder produce.

The Nordic countries grow temperate climate crops which are threatened by numerous plant pathogens, and the teaching emphasizes sustainable solutions to disease problems on those crops. Also substantial expertise is available at the participating universities within the field of tropical and subtropical crops and diseases, so the programme does not only focus on local conditions and problems, but it will be an ideal window to study plant diseases that cause problems in developing countries and the management of these, making use of available know-how, technologies and equipment as part of current projects throughout the world.
