Course abstract

Timber processing
Processes for wood harvest (incl. terrain-transport) are distinguished for passable and non- passable situations and are finally judged with regard to economic, ergonomic and ecological criteria under special consideration for operating supplies. Improvement of decision-making by means of using value-analytic algorithms.
Handling, grading and timber characterisation
Environmental factors influencing timber quality. Handling of timber; round timber grading according to Nordic and European standards. Measuring and grading of logs: new techniques.
Sawmill techniques
The sawmilling industry is the most important customer for round wood. The objective is that the students should acquire fundamental knowledge about the production of sawn wood.
The freshness of wood for different purposes will be defined. Various biological factors affecting the handling processes will be outlined.
Wood as a fuel. The assortments that may be utilised as fuel including forest residues and industrial by-products will be discussed. Integration of forest fuel production into traditional forestry system, its ecological and socio-economical consequences.
Wood drying. Quality of wood drying is regarded world-wide as a key factor for value-adding processing of wood products. The emphasis is strongly on improved quality, lower costs and more efficient utilisation of a valuable resource.
