Before this period, participants have to read selected literature. After the period in Denmark, the participants have to prepare a short report on a subject, selected on the basis of the specific interest of each participant.

Course abstract

The course aims to provide the students with a theoretical and practical background for research on insect pathogens, both related to social insects and related to other insects of economic importance.

The following elements will be covered:

* Concepts for insect pathology
* Transmission of diseases and epidemiology
* Sampling for prevalence studies
* Co-evolution between host and pathogen
* Diagnosis of various types of diseases
* Molecular methods as tools in insect pathology
*Applied aspects of insect pathology

The course will be provided as lecture, practicals and an excursion. Further the phd students will read original scientific literature before and during the course.

Due to the emphasis on both entomological, microbiological and molecular method methods the course will be useful for phd students in several scientific fields: social insects, apidology, insect pathology, applied entomology, environmental issues, microbial control.

The course is a part of the series of NOVA courses within the BEE NOVA initiative but is not limited to people who have participated in other BEE NOVA activities.
